POORGOOD Very Good MASTERPIECE

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948)

Bogart was excellent in this movie. I watched it again the other day. This is definitely one of his greatest performances. I don't view Fred C. Dobbs as an out and out villain though, he is really a tragic figure : a portrait of greed making a man slowly go mad. This is a much better portrayal of madness than the juggling ball bearings of Captain Queeg in The Caine Mutiny (1954) to me it is more subtle and chilling.

Way Out West (1937)

One of the very best Laurel and Hardy features. It is a great fun film : one minor criticism is like most of the features it sort off could be broken down into episodes, the first attempt to get the deed to the gold mine and then the second successful attempt. I think it is a little less unified than Sons of the Desert (1933) but still a very funny film, occasionally the gags are a bit broad and oddly disturbing such as the scene where Stan is pulling Ollie's head all over the place.

White Heat (1949)

Cagney was an actor of the old school before the method who believed in putting your feet together, reading the lines and meaning them. His Cody Jarrett is one of his greatest performances no doubt even if the mother fixated element is a little overdone it is perfectly in character. White Heat (1949) is a bit like The Public Enemy (1931) with all the creakiness of that film ironed out and an extra element of raw energy and danger added. Cagney also made Cody much more sympathetic than you would think he would be if you just read the script. Cody does some very nasty things in the movie but the audience routes for him, as all the great screen actors did Cagney dominates every frame.

Whoopee! (1930)

A bit stagey but some neat Berkeley numbers and Cantor's exuberance keeps it entertaining. It helps that it is a pretty good score. Entertaining if not exactly PC.
