POORGOOD Very Good MASTERPIECE

The Prisoner of Zenda (1937)

Excellent movie. Douglas Fairbanks Jnr indeed steals the show from Ronald Colman : they have a great sword fight though you wonder what happened to Hentzau after he jumped out of that window. He is charming but a villain nevertheless so weird to see him seemingly going unpunished.

The Public  Enemy (1931)

This is IMO the best of the three early gangster classics. Most of its success  comes from Cagney's performance as Tom Powers. He also gets the audience's sympathy completely despite his violent actions : Cagney connects with you in this movie. You side with him because of his sheer vitality even if you know he is totallywrong and headed for disaster.

Psycho (1960)

Hitchcock's masterpiece of suspense and horror broke the rules by killing off its star in the first half of the movie but remains compelling experience with a great performance from Anthony Perkins.

Queen Christina (1933)

One of Garbo's best films with two unforgettable sequences : the final one of her impassive face on the boat and her memorising the room where she has just had the greatest experience of her life.

Gilbert is excellent too and the film always reduces me to tears.

Rear Window (1954)

Fascinating exercise in voyeurism and possibly the most typical Hitchcock film, despite its the limitations of its setting (James Stewart's apartment) it keeps its grip very well. A beautiful close-up of Grace Kelly kissing Jimmy, she was never better.
